Approaching the surfboard design as an optimization problem, we want to support a more quantitative
design approach. Thus optimization was handled in several methods:
- creation of an empirical data base designed to match a surfboard to a surfer, which later
became our project known as the board selector.
- a scientific approach looked at surfboard geometry as a numerical objective. The objective
function of the design optimization sought to minimize the difference in speeds between the
breaking wave and the surfer. the end result was a dimensional output of a surfboard
template custom to the surfer for a specific break.
- a scientific approach into the study of surfboard hydrodynamics, by utilizing existing
theories of waves kinematics and dynamics, planning boat hull design and numerical simulation
methods. we investigate variations in the surfboard shape using dbs technologies to create a
scientifically enhanced surfboard based on performance.
